Is a Hair Transplant the Best Solution for Hair Loss?

· · Comments

Hair loss is a frustrating, confidence-shaking experience that millions of Americans face.

When you are dealing with a receding hairline or widening part, you want to know your options for hair regrowth.

You may be asking, “Should I get a hair transplant?” or “Would a hair transplant work for me?”

While hair transplants have gotten better since the plugs of the 80’s, there are still some upsides and downsides that should be investigated before getting one.

How is a Hair Transplant Done?

For those dealing with excess hair loss over a long period of time or are now at a point where the hair follicles are dead (which is indicated by a slick and shinny scalp), a hair transplant may be an option you have started considering. oThis cosmetic procedure involves taking hairs from a thicker part of the scalp and transplanting them to the part where the hair is scarce.

This procedure doesn’t actually stop hair loss, it simply moves hairs from one section to another.

Most of the time it does give the illusion of more hair since there are typically places on the head still thick with more hair than necessary.

And, not all hairs are affected by DHT, so the hairs from another location may continue to grow in the space where the other hairs could not.

These hairs are harvested in groups of 1-4 hairs to create a more natural look than the plugs that used to be used (much larger clusters of hair follicles).

There are two popular methods of hair transplant.

Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE) vs. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

These are two similar methods, but they have a few differences.

With FUE, a few hairs are taken from different parts of the back part of the head to be moved to the thinning area.

With FUT, a strip of skin is taken from the back of the scalp with a number of hair follicles that are then moved to the thin area in small groups.

In both cases, groups of 1-4 hairs are moved to the balding area to give a natural look.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) doesn’t produce a large scar, just hundreds of very tiny scars that are not very visible when healed.

This method might work better with people who experience overall thinning or have light hair that won’t be able to cover losing a whole strip.

Unfortunately, this method also doesn’t have as high of a follicle survival rate.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) will cause a larger scar that is typically covered by other hair.

It may become obvious with certain haircuts—especially if the hair is shaved short.

It does have a higher success rate since more of the surrounding area is removed for each follicle group.

Both methods will result in the same aesthetic for the hairline or crown.

The results are going to largely depend on the skill of the dermatologist performing the surgery and if the follicles take hold or not.

How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost?

Probably the biggest turnoff factor for most people is the sheer cost of hair transplants.

If the invasive nature of the transplants wasn’t’ enough, the fact that it isn’t cheap can be a real barrier.

The exact amount you will spend on a hair transplant depends a lot on where you live and the dermatologist who will do the procedure.

If your hair surgeon is considered the best, it will likely cost more.

And, you don’t want to go cheap here!

Although, high rates do not always mean a matching increase in skill—so you will have to do your research carefully.

The shorter answer: it is going to cost thousands.

The cost typically ranges from $4,000-$15,000, per procedure. Most people need a few procedures before the desired results are achieved.

And, because it is a cosmetic surgery (not medically necessary), those costs are all going to be coming out of pocket.

How much hair you want to transplant is going to change the cost, since more patches will be significantly more expensive.

In some cases, the top hair surgeon won’t be in your area.

So, you may need to plan for travel expenses as well.

Hair Transplant Recovery Time

This is a surgery and will require recovery time.

In most cases, your surgeon will allow you to return to work the next day.

It may take up to three weeks to heal, especially depending on the amount of hair moved.

Your surgeon will likely recommend you avoid any pullover shirts (t-shirts included) as you heal.

Anything that might touch or damage the hair transplant sites is going to be avoided during your healing time.

You should also be aware of common complications that may occur.

Some of the ones you may experience include:

  • Growth failure in transplanted follicles
  • Scarring at the transplant sites
  • Swelling (edema) 2-6 days post-surgery
  • Swollen and black eyes (less common)
  • Numbness of transplant sites
  • Cysts developing at the suture site
  • Excessive bleeding from transplant areas
  • Infection at the transplant sites
  • Folliculitis—or inflamed hair follicles

Before You Get a Hair Transplant…

If you are losing hair and want to restore your thickness, a hair transplant might be a potential solution.

If you’ve gotten to the point where you are considering an invasive surgery on your scalp, you’ve probably tried a number of other home remedies and solutions that just didn’t work.

You should also know:

  • If your hair is genetically sensitive to DHT, a transplant won’t stop the hair from falling out in those affected areas.
  • The hair transplant surgery will NOT create more hair—it just moves hair from a thicker area to a spot with significant hair loss.
  • If your hair is thin all over your head, a hair transplant surgery isn’t going to help.
  • After surgery, you will STILL need to use a hair loss prevention product to minimize further loss.
